Earlier this year, WHO officiallyannounced that glyphosate, best-known as the herbicide Roundup, is a carcinogen. Roundup is synonymous with GMO crops, as GMO crops are specifically designed to grow with plenty of Roundup--in fact, between 1992 and 2012, farmers drenched crops in an estimated 2.6 billion pounds of glyphosate. 80 percent of global GMO crops are engineered to be "Roundup ready."
Given this prevalence, there are a lot of obvious places to expect glyphosate-laden GMOs, particularly in food crops. However, we should also remember that non-food crops are also susceptible to GMOs. Cotton female hygiene products, particularly tampons, have been examined more closely as of late.
The University of La Plata in Argentina performed a preliminary study finding glyphosate in 85 percent of cotton hygiene products. Sixty-two percent of the samples also tested positive for AMPA (or aminomethylphosphonic acid), a derivative of glyphosate.
Samples tested included locally-purchased gauze, swabs, wipes and feminine care products such as tampons and sanitary pads. According to Dr. Medardo Avila Vazquez, glyphosate is usually sprayed when the cotton bud is open, which means the condensed glyphosate goes directly into the product.
Other natural options are available, including organic hygiene products, menstrual cups, cloth pads, and sea sponges.
All Life Choice® products are produced with non-GMO ingredients, we make certain of this fact, everything that goes into our formulations are non-GMO and paraben free. We recognize the dangers of food / commodity toxicity and educate consumers of the importance of knowing the differences in order to make healthy choices.
