Global Research Shows Dairy Products and Calcium Supplements Do Not Make Bones Stronger
A new report on calcium supplementation recently made headlines on NBC. The latest study was a meta-analysis conducted by the University of Auckland in New Zealand. In observing all the high-quality calcium studies that had been done, researchers found that most of the studies indicated no benefit for those over 50 in taking extra calcium--by supplements or by food.
For decades, women have been advised to simply take more calcium. A recommended dose of 800 mg became 1000 mg, then 1200 mg, and some women are advised to take up to 1500 mg of extra calcium! The problem is that taking more calcium does not build stronger bones, according to clinical studies. Instead, excess calcium can be deposited in the arteries, contributing to arteriosclerosis, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. This is referred to as thecalcium paradox. Research suggests that we do not need more calcium, we need calcium managers. Calcium managers are co-nutrients that aid building bones. Perhaps the best known calcium managers are vitamin D, magnesium and boron. And even calcium plus vitamin D is not enough. The secret to keeping bones strong and arteries clear is vitamin K2, Vitamin D and Magnesium.
We have been saying the same things for years: that the calcium taken in un-absorbable forms like gluconate, or the one medical doctors mainly suggest, caltrate, are in the form of calcium carbonate and also sold as an antacid; yet, they do nothing to strengthen the bone. In fact, these supplements actually add to the overall calcium accumulation in the blood, and it is damaging the health of seniors.
We must set the record straight: calcium is good to take on a daily basis, but it must first be in an absorbable form and secondly it must be taken in conjunction with equal parts of highly absorbable magnesium, like our orotate and Vitamin D and K2-MK7 and trace minerals. Vitamin K2 helps to channel calcium into the bones, and maybe just as importantly, vitamin K2 helps keep calcium from depositing into the artery wall where it is not beneficial. Without Vitamin K2, the body cannot direct calcium to the bones where it’s needed; instead, the calcium resides in soft tissue (like the arteries)—leading to a combination of osteoporosis and atherosclerosis, or the dreaded “calcium paradox.” A Vitamin K2 deficiency is a risk (in the form of cancer and diabetes, among other ailments), but with K2 these conditions improve.
Just like our food is balanced, so must our supplements be.
Life Choice Opti-Cal/Mag with K2 has been specially formulated to provide the strong bones we need, but without the extra buildup. We hope that you will consider the capabilities of this remarkable product!
