Two University Research Studies:

A Lack Of Sleep Leads To Depression In Adults And Adolescents

(Calgary, AB)  Two recent studies published in the Journal "Sleep" (Issue: February 1, 2014) showed a relationship between sleep duration and depression. According to Dr. M. Safwan Badr, Presidents of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, "Healthy sleep is necessity for physical, mental and emotional well-being."

In the first study of adult twins... "results suggest that sleep duration outside the normal range increases the genetic risk for depressive symptoms. For those adults who slept five hours or less the genetic influence on depressive symptoms nearly doubled when compared to those adults who slept a normal sleep duration of 7 - 8.9 hours per night."

According to the studies lead researcher, Dr. Nathaniel Watson, associate professor of neurology and co-director of the University of Washington Medicine Sleep Center in Seattle, Wash. “...both short [and excessively long sleep] durations appear to activate genes related to depressive symptoms.”

...a lack of sleep "results in a decrease in daytime function. It can affect your physical health by weakening your immune system . It can affect your mental health by resulting in tension, irritability, depression, confusion, and generally lower life satisfaction." [Article: Brown University Health Education Department].

In a second study of adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 "... results suggest sleeping six hours or less per night increases the risk for major depression, which in turn increases the risk for decreased sleep among adolescents."

According to this studies principal investigator Dr. Robert E. Roberts, professor behavioral sciences in the School of Public Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas, "... these results are important because they suggest that sleep deprivation may be a precursor for major depression in adolescents, occurring before other symptoms of major depression and additional mood disorders."
