Due to mixed messages about safety, soy product usage can be a difficult choice for some women.On one hand, this concern is not completely unfounded. Genetically modified soy can bring more harm than good, and that reputation has heavily weighed upon the entire soy industry—genetically modified or not. The other downside to this ill-gotten reputation is that women may turn to wild yam products, thinking they are a viable alternative. However, the human body is not capable of converting wild yam (diosgenin) into progesterone.

In Canada, researchers participated in a two-year clinical trial evaluating the health effects of soy isoflavones, either alone or with exercise. Over 300 postmenopausal women were studied, and soy was found to be effective for improving leg strength. Also, soy either alone or with exercise also lowered LDL-cholesterol by 6%. It also reduced adverse menopausal symptoms, such as: breast tenderness, decreased concentration, depression, fatigue, hot flashes, insomnia, numbness, vaginal dryness and itching, night sweats, subjective weight gain, migraines, anxiety, irritability, and changes in bleeding patterns. Supplementation did not affect two measures of safety, endometrial thickness and mammographic density, which are both assessed to determine the risk of endometrial and breast cancer, respectively. These results agree with a large dataset showing isoflavones don’t affect these markers.
In 2009, a Shanghai study of 5,000 women showed significant survival rate increases over 5 years that corresponded with a greater soy intake. This study covered all types of breast cancer, including estrogen positive, as well as tamoxifen users.
In Eastern countries where more soy is consumed, soy has been found to be a significant factor in their lower breast cancer rates. For a similar effect, at least 10 mg/day of isoflavones from whole soy foods must be consumed. In China and the US, a 2012 study found that out of 9,500 breast cancer patients, those who consumed at least 10 mg/day of soy isoflavones had both a lower recurrence rate and a higher survival rate.
