Drinking Water: Prevents Heart Attacks

Studies have consistently shown that drinking water is good for you. It is an excellent replacement for pop, energy drinks, coffee and sugary fruit juices. However, current research seems to suggest that drinking water might also help reduce your risk of a heart attack.

In 2002, the American Journal of Medical Epidemiology published a study that found that people who drink more that five or more glasses of plain water a day have a much lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease compared to those who drink less than two glasses per day.

The study seems to suggest that risk factors that are normally associated with coronary heart disease, like blood viscosity, appear to increase with dehydration. The study also seems to indicated that hydration of the body may be more effective than other suggested preventative measures like weight loss or exercise.
It appears that the benefits in question only occur when the fluid in question is plain drinking water. Drinking other types of liquids such as coffee, pop or energy drinks will not act as a substitute.

A Serious Note About Heart Attacks: You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep.
